Cross Training Questions

cross training with elliptical as good as running?

I have a stress fracture and can't run. I do the cross training mode on the machine is it close to the same workout as running? will doing the elliptical help me not lose fitness? thanks!

  1. It will definitely help because it's low impact and it will keep you in shape. Just increase the resistance and work at a fast pace. Then when you're healed up you'll be in shape still, but it'll probably take a while to get back in shape.
  2. It depends what you mean by as good as running. The last time I tried to use a treadmill, back in the latter half of '06, I suffered horrible back-pain. Ultimately I had to give up my treadmill which I only used about 9 times a month, and which took off about 10 lbs in 6 mos. This year I discovered my elliptical. I've lost about 20lbs since the end of January (with no change in my diet) - I go on it for about 70-90 minutes, about 15 times a month. Now here's the thing - if I'd gone on the treadmill for about as long as I went on the elliptical, I probbaly would ahve lost more weight. But the beauty of the elliptical is that it's not as grueling as the treadmill or running in general, so you're more likely to be able to do it, and therefore have a more sustained fitness routine.
